Apparently, the average couple talk for only five minutes per day! Yet communication is the most important aspect of a relationship. Once we stop communicating, stop being affectionate and stop making love, we no longer have a relationship. There are many partnerships which lack those three essential ingredients and are still limping along to infinity, with two very unhappy individuals. Communication is not just verbal. It includes every message feeling, desire and thought we convey to the other person by way of eye contact, emotion or body language. The secret of communicating effectively is knowing how to avoid the unhappy, harmful interactions. Poor communicators tend to compete with one another in discussions, to blame each other constantly to boost their egos and to find scapegoats. Everything is a competition for them and they are more interested in being right than having a successful relationship. They perceive themselves to be all-knowing, never giving an inch to anyone, while consistently demanding their own right of way. They are not focused on the relationship they share, only on the arguments, tending to be secretive, self righteous and in denial, so conditions are always tense as they compete for control. It is mainly about who wins and who is right or wrong, without any acknowledgement of the others feelings or fears. In their eyes, there is only ever one way of doing or seeing things their way. No one, or any other method, is ever valid or accepted. Characteristics of poor communicators are the following: * Criticism: They usually have a steady flow of criticism, put-downs or blame for their partner. But the trouble with blame is that it keeps us focused on our partners to prevent us seeing, or accepting, our own faults. * Defensiveness: Neither partner feels cared for or listened to. They are both too busy defending themselves in the abusive onslought and fighting to get their points in. * Denial of Discussion: They respond to criticism with defensiveness, often denying everything even discussion, making excuses and accusing their partner of being 'emotional', 'stupid', 'silly' or 'mad'. * Gift of Sanity: Poor communicators are usually the ones who claim to be 'sane' and 'reasonable' and 'caring'. They always feel put-upon and the victim. * Biased Perception: Individual perception is usually biased, distorted or contradictory. There is also likely to be lots of exaggeration and anger instead of compromise. * Straying from the Isssue: They tend to stray from the main issue and find no solutions, throwing all kinds of complaints and insults at their partner, but without aiming for anything constructive. * Mind Reading: They tend to mind read and/or psychoanalyse their partner excessively, as well as name-call and show contempt by mocking, rolling their eyes, being insulting, counter-attacking and interrupting constantly. * Holding Out: There is a determination by poor communicators not to give in, only to show they are right, with lots of anger, and, eventually, deadly silence. * Stonewalling: When the attacks get too much, or when they hear something they do not like, there is likely to be no response. Instead poor communicators withdraw from the situation in a self-righteous way(stonewalling), preventing any kind of discussion or resolution. Obesity continues to rise now affecting one in five Americans. And incredibly, over 60% of American adults are now overweight.1 Somehow, our diet obsession has turned us into the fattest people in history. Weve also seen an explosion of other diet-related problems. Here in my clinic, so many of my new patients just can't figure out why theyre so tired. In todays Health Alert, well look at where weve gone wrong. Ill also give you a few tips for getting back to a more natural routine. Americans: Overfed but Undernourished Our tastes naturally guide us to food thats good for us. Unless our ancestors were starving, they didn't eat grains because grains didn't taste good. Without processing, grains are hard, gritty, tasteless and difficult to digest. A natural balance ensued. The grains escaped mammalian predation and we stuck to foods we are adapted to eat. In the recent low-carb trend, Americans got a little closer to the mark, but they still didn't hit it. Not all carbohydrates are equal. Vegetables are a great source of carbs. They're high in fiber, which slows the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose. That's important because it also slows your body's release of insulin. Fruits, nuts, and seeds are good as well. You can eat all these in their natural form and they are all good carbs. Grains, potatoes, and corn cant be eaten without processing or cooking and turn out to be problematic. They're higher in starch and create huge amounts of blood sugar eventually leading to insulin overproduction, which only leads to weight gain. Lumping vegetables in with grains just because theyre both carbohydrates, ignores these critical differences and just doesn't make nutritional sense. We also tend to focus on single foods, sometimes declaring them the path to true health. Take soy for example. Many will tell you that soy prevents heart disease and cancer, lowers cholesterol, and is an all around good thing to eat. But it just ain't so Research links soy to decreased fertility, a higher risk of some cancers, and hormone imbalances. Still, the food industry grabbed hold of some promising study early on, some misleading tidbit of information, and created a booming market for soy. It's now in 70% of processed foods.4 Revolutionize the Way You Think about Food Do you think more about what you like to eat or what you are supposed to avoid? One perspective leads to fulfillment and satisfaction. When you feel good about what youre eating, you naturally eat less. The other leads to guilt, regret and a propensity to eat more. First, think about whats good to eat: Eat more protein. Eggs from free-range chickens and grass-fed beef or bison are my favorites. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Eat more nuts and seeds. Enjoy a bit of chocolate now and again. A glass of wine most days won't hurt either. Next, how to eat: Dont skip breakfast. Make dinner an event. Plan the meal. Invite the family. Set the mood. And enjoy each other's company as much as you enjoy the meal. Chew. Slow down and savor the meal. Pause. Set your fork down between bites. Pay attention. When you feel comfortable and not hungry, decide to be done. Eating healthy is as simple as eating the foods you were built to eat. Now you dont know what worked and what didnt. Is there anything you can do now before you continue with your marketing efforts and potentially continue spending money on not-so-effective marketing activities? First of all, dont beat yourself up. You are not alone. In fact, one of my biggest challenges as a marketing consultant has been to get my clients to track the effectiveness of their various marketing activities. The first thing to do is recognize the importance of tracking, and make sure that you have a plan in place to track all of your future marketing activities. The simplest way to track is to ask each new customer where or how they found out about you. You may also want to consider including a code on any flyers or brochures that you distribute, and providing a reason for the customer to bring that flyer in when they come to make a purchase. Reasons to return the flyer could be to take advantage of a special offer, or to get a discount or free bonus gift. You can also do this by phone or on the Internet if that is how your customers make purchases. Simply ask them to provide you with the code on the brochure or flyer that they are calling or ordering from. Make sure the code is specific to the location or group of people that you distributed the flyer to. If you are networking or speaking to a group and someone gives you their business card and agrees to receive your free report or e-newsletter, make sure you include a reference in your contact database of the event where you met them. As far as tracking your past marketing activities, consider asking your current customers how they found out about you. You could do a survey that includes a number of customer satisfaction questions, but also includes a question to determine how they found out about you. If you have a handful of clients that you work closely with and you really dont know how they found you, pick up the phone and ask them. Either of these tactics should give you an idea of what marketing activities worked and which ones you may be able to do without in the future. If you're still not sure, continue with all the marketing activities, BUT put tracking mechanisms into place so you won't end up in the same boat next year. Defining your services and target groups are an important step in effective marketing. It is not enough to say you are a therapist. Therapy is too broad and non-specific. Marketing is simply getting the word out about what you do. Not choosing a target market or markets is like trying to get your voice heard over the din of your whole community. You arent going to be heard. If you want to effectively communicate and get the word out, you need to know to whom you want to communicate. Thats the idea behind the exercise of choosing a niche market. No one can effectively market to everyone. Great marketing goes in depth with a specific target group. Surface attempts to get the attention of the masses does not work. Sometimes a niche can be a clinical specialty. Specialties attract clients more than a general practice. It will also attract your ideal client the type of client and services you most enjoy in your work. Sophisticated consumers today are more likely to seek out a specialist if they can find one. It may take some time and reflection to identify ideal niches for your practice. It may evolve over time. Or maybe one day, your niche will jump out at you. Richard Bolles said, Your mission is where the worlds deepest hunger and your hearts greatest gladness intersect. The same can be said for identifying your niche. Some questions to stimulate your thinking: Think about your previous clients. What profession was your most enjoyable client? What characteristic of clients do you tend to attract? What similar problems do your clients seem to have? What type of situation have you been most effective in? What knowledge and skills have your accumulated? How have you utilized (or underutilized) them in your work to date? Developing a Service Line As you define your practice, you will want to select a niche or maybe a few niches and get to know them well. You will research their felt needs and urgent concerns. You will shape your services to meet these needs and develop effective ways of communicating to your niche. Do some market research. What are the felt needs and issues that appear to be of urgent concern to people in the target group you plan to serve? Talk to and interview a number of people in your target market to find out. Read the newsletters they read. Attend meetings they attend. Make a list of the kinds of services you have interest in providing and what interests and energizes you. Examples: Helping ADHD executives increase productivity Assisting struggling college students to achieve better grades Helping singles to have greater success in dating relationships. The basic idea is to match the felt needs of your market with solutions that you can offer, based on what services command your interest and is within your capability. You may need to receive some training if a service is not within your current skill set. By zeroing in on a specific niche and line of services, you will develop a competitive advantage over other providers in your area, due to your specialization. You will eventually develop a reputation for the service that will attract referrals to you. Speaking of competition, there are advantages to having services in our line that are not covered by managed care. Although many people will opt to pay out of pocket for customized, quality services, others may not. Examples of services that are not covered by managed care include child-custody evaluations and other court-related services, psycho-educational evaluations, business consulting and coaching business owners or executives. Other examples of specific services include resiliency training, co-parenting counseling for divorcing parents, divorce recovery groups, marriage enrichment retreats, career counseling for professionals in transition, court-ordered psychological evaluations, forensic consulting in personal injury cases, or a 10-week group for business professionals with ADHD. Again, more traditional services, such as psychotherapy for anxiety or depression, are fine as well. There are effective ways to market these services and gather private-pay referrals. Reiki-ho is not only a wonderful healing technique, but also an effective way to raise spirituality and to create a positive life. Reiki brings all within and around the body into balance, surrounding with harmony, and thus healing the mind, body, and spirit. I have had students say to me, Reiki is making such a positive difference in my life. Reiki can be described as multidimensional. It goes to the core of the imbalance in mind, body, or spirit, the nucleus of the cell, and then moves imperceptibly outward through the tissue balancing and thus healing. We have heard of the invisible diseases, I introduce you to one of the invisible healers. Those of you familiar with herbs know of Dr. John R. Anyone in the world By Joshua Carson This is going to be a seriously abridged version of my exciting NEW book. I put this together because it can be an all in one reference guide
to smart steps towards increasing weight loss, and the things
to watch out for. Like the Cookie Monster. Hell get you in the
middle of the night. So without further adue, lets get started. Well start from the
beginning. Again, this is gonna be the bare bone basics. You will need to read the book in order to get it all
explained in detail. This is just to be used as a reminder of what
to do, and what not to do. Remember to plan your meals ahead of time. Space your meals out.
Go with 5-6 small meals, this keeps your metabolism up all day. Big meals once or twice a day reminds your body of famine. It tries to hoard everything it
can, and is not sure when the next meal is coming. Better to play it safe than sorry. Avoid the Man made foods. Its very high in calories and useless
ones at that. Avoid pizza, yes we all love it. But a good pizza can
account for the majority of our daily calories. Believe me, Ive done
the math. Add weight lifting to your regimen. The more
muscle you have, the more calories you burn. Try and do some
aerobic work at least 3 days a week. Wanna a big tip? Do your aerobic work first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach.
Youll burn the fat! Some people understand this, and
others dont really know what this translates to. Put it this way.
The 45 min. aerobic workout you do in the morning, it would take
2 hrs. and 15 min. to get the same effect if you do this
same workout at night!! Do not drink sodas. Drink only juices and water. A carb/energy
drink is ok for workouts, and actually highly recommended. Do count your calories. You would be amazed at how many calories
we consume by drinking fluids. Sometimes 2/3 of our allotted caloric
intake for the day. A quick and easy formula to find your recommended caloric intake is
to take your bodyweight and multiply by 10. This is your recommended
daily caloric intake. Very simple. Vitamins, take them. In my book I cover a few vitamins that have been
proven to help you lose weight. A few of them are Vitamin C,
Chromium Picolinate, and Calcium. We also discuss vitamins that
overweight children are deficient in. Drink water, and lots of it. Drinking 10 glasses a day stops water
retention. Less weight and you avoid looking bloated.
Try not to eat after 6 p.m. Your metabolism has pretty much shut down
by then. For a snack try Air popped popcorn or a protein shake an
hour or two before you go to sleep. Eat to live, dont live to eat. Weigh yourself daily. Same time every day. Make adjustments as
necessary. On my 10 wk. program it is absolutely no problem to lose
up to 25 lbs. of unwanted weight. Train your abs daily. Yes they are pesky. But a 15 min. daily investment
will give you the look you want. I recently did one of those ab contests,
put it this way. They wouldnt even submit my photos. You should have
